Granola and Fruit Muesli

I was introduced to muesli or at least the correct way to eat it, during our last vacation to Europe. I’ve bought store brand “Muesli” packages in the past and the Ikea variety but never really knew the right way to enjoy it. I used to just add milk and eat it like cereal. Our recent trip to Bali got us eating muesli everyday for breakfast at the hotel and it was a welcome change from the usual. I realized this was not only easy to make but could be a huge time saver during those busy mornings. You can actually soak the oats in juice and/or milk overnight and have it ready for the next day. I tried it this morning and my food critic, Nikhil loved it.

Ingredients: (serves 3-4)
Any granola (I prefer the granola since it has nuts and dry fruits already mixed in but you can also try rolled oats) – 1 cup
Milk – 1 1/2 – 2 cups
Yoghurt – 1-2 tbsp (I used greek yoghurt for added protein but you can use either plain or vanilla yoghurt)
Orange juice – 1/4 cup – optional
red apple, chopped into fine pieces – 1/2
Banana, chopped into small pieces – 1/2
Chopped raisins and pecans (optional) – 1 tsp each
Honey or agave syrup – 1 tsp

Method:
1. Soak the granola in the milk. You may also soak it in orange juice as a first step. This is entirely optional.
2. Add the yoghurt to this. (I used greek yoghurt with honey)
3. Add the chopped fruits, raisins and nuts.
4. Soak this mixture for about an hour to 8 hours. You can store this overnight in the fridge and enjoy cold the next morning.

    • Wasn’t that cold but anything to help lessen the breakfast time in the am. Great that I can make this the night before. send over other quick breakfast ideas if you have them.

  2. We 3 ( me and kids) aredefinetly drink breakfast type people :-) Raj is a standard, oatmeal+ friut+ nuts person thankfully caters to his needs himself.

    our breakfast usually is

    milk shake , apple+ banana+ +dates + soaked almonds+ milk or almond milk + a bit of whey protein added in or any combination of above.

    Pancakes ( trader joe multigrain pmncake mix) mixed at night + blueberries, takes 5 min to make inthe morning + yougurt + apple

    Most days i take apple + cheese + walnuts + the ever present TEA and Toast

    Aditi is banana milk shake with cooked cream of wheat added in it.- pretty much on a daily basis.

    if nothing else, it’s toadt with peanut butter + honey for rohan with Mil+ whey protein.

    But i’m going to get muesli and try it as a snack.. never had it before i think i could do the soaked soft stuff.
    I thought with aunty present you’d be enjoying garamagaram parathas in the morning?

    • This is a fab list. I may even post it as its own post called “Mythili’s contributions”. Thanks for sharing. Some good ideas, especially the pancake and smoothies. I love smoothies myself, not sure if you “invested” in a Vitamix but its worth the buy especially if you like smoothies. Garamagaram parathas sounds soo good, but I’m glad I’m not having them for breakfast…I do get to eat them at times for lunch:) not hot off the stove but at least some decent lunch box options. On a serious note, let me know if you do want to contribute on a regular basis to RKK.

        Sure after raising Mr.Picky Rohan reach the ripe old age of 12 with my Sanity Intact , I send you an email when i cook up something not mundane. I’ll send you more 5min breakfast stuff.. practiced with 2 lazy kids trying to make the bus,
        Did you ever imagine we would be cooking like this when we were in College?? did we ever step by the kitchen except to hog??
